Healing isn’t a straight line. It’s a winding path filled with pauses, insights, and gentle steps forward. This journey can be both beautiful and challenging, as it often takes us through the terrain of our past, our fears, and ultimately, our true selves.
We can’t force healing.
It took me a good amount of time to get there. To really understand, feel and allow peace.
I was always a strong headed and believer that if you fix something into your mind, you can do it. And you can, but there’s a price for it. And even that price, I thought to myself, is worth paying. But it’s not. You know why? There’s a journey called regression. Yep, you go back to what you know best: defensive mechanisms as an escape when body and mind feels it has been enough. When you keep pushing and pushing and you’re not listening to the signs that screams STOP! That regression, for the system, is a safe space. For you (for my mind), is a return to the beginning. But this time your system (your biological set up) needs to feed on that safety even more. Because you lost its trust. It needs time to recuperate. So now you need time to settle, to recuperate, to trust, to find forgiveness, to release the shame, to find strength to start again.
The Process
Often, it begins the moment you stop running from yourself, when you finally choose to face the emotions and experiences that have shaped you. But my friends, you need a gentle helping hand in this process. If nothing else then simply because you need a witness in the process. Your biological setup (as a human) requires this. Read this again, pls.
Healing starts with awareness.
Healing starts with being honest with yourself.
It begins when you become conscious of the sensations in your body, the emotions that arise, and the patterns that have developed over time. This awareness is the first step toward understanding how your past experiences have influenced your present self. To really understand what was said in that conversation that made you feel this way. And to feel that vibe, to remember, to learn what it is or was for You. Not what you were told, or your friend says, or ‘your mum knows you best’, but what You Feel as a sensation and replicated emotion in that situation.
And yes you can walk through life and keep ignoring those signals, you can develop a way to compensate, distract, and ‘keep getting high’ on what makes you happy. But ask yourself a question please, is this really what life is about? Would you not want to ‘be high’ on life most of the time? Not just sometimes.
In body psychotherapy, we cultivate this awareness through mindful exploration, asking right questions and building relationships between yourself and the therapist. You learn to listen to your body, to honor the messages, and to understand the stories it tells you. This process is surely transformative, as it allows you to reconnect with your authentic self. Maybe even, for some, for the first time.
Recognizing the impact of your experiences on your physical and emotional well-being is very empowering. In body psychotherapy we don’t just talk; we listen to the language of your body. This approach allows you to explore the tension, the holding, and the silent survival strategies that have carried you this far.
Creating Safety and Support
As we embark on this healing journey, for me, it’s essential to create an environment of safety and support. Healing can be vulnerable work, and having a safe space to explore your feelings and sensations is crucial. In body psychotherapy, I prioritize creating a trusting relationship between us, therapist and a client, where you can feel comfortable expressing yourself without fear of judgment.
This safe space allows you to feel supported as you navigate the complexities of your emotions. It’s a place where you can take the time you need to process your experiences, allowing for pauses and reflections along the way. When you feel safe, you are more likely to engage with your body and emotions honestly, paving the way for deeper insights and healing.
Have You Ever Wondered What Shaped You?
Have you ever wondered what shaped you into who you are today? What experiences have left their mark on your body and mind? In the body psychotherapy approach I encourage you to reflect on these questions and explore the stories that have influenced your life. Not by talking alone, but within time diving deeper into the layers of your existence.
By examining your past and how it has impacted your present, you can gain valuable insights that support your healing journey. This exploration can lead to a deeper understanding of your emotional responses, relationships, and the choices you make in life.
